We are pleased to welcome the LIFE DIMITRA as the newest addition to the Biorefine Cluster Europe community.
This EU project is transforming biogas digestate into high‑value, bio‑based fertilisers to support climate‑friendly agriculture. By demonstrating innovative valorisation technologies at pilot sites in Greece and Italy, the project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve nutrient recycling and enhance farm sustainability, while promoting circular and low‑carbon solutions for agricultural waste management. |

You can now register for the ESNI–NERM 2026 Conference, the Flagship Event on Nutrient Recycling, taking place in Brussels on 28–29 April 2026. The event is co-organised by the Biorefine Cluster Europe and the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform.
The conference will highlight the latest research and demonstration results in nutrient management and nutrient recycling, bringing together key stakeholders from across the sector.

LUCRA highlights electrification for a greener bioproduction future
|
|
Many bioprocesses rely heavily on chemicals and water, producing saline waste streams and generating environmental challenges. But electrification offers a smarter way forward:
- Replace conventional acid and base dosing in fermentation
- Enable electricity-driven extraction and purification of products
- Reduce saline waste streams and water contamination
With electrochemical technologies maturing and renewable electricity increasingly available, electrification is becoming a key lever for the biobased economy – and projects like LUCRA are already putting it into practice.

FUELGAE: A zero-waste approach to turning CO2 into biofuels

The feature shines a spotlight on several of FUELGAE’s key innovations and acknowledges the broader challenges faced by the biofuels sector — particularly cost barriers — and highlights how projects like FUELGAE can provide critical evidence to policymakers as Europe advances regulations in aviation, shipping, and beyond.

Latest advances in SEMPRE‑BIO case studies
|
|
SEMPRE‑BIO has published two new blog updates highlighting progress across its pilot demonstrations. The update on Case Study 1 reports that the pilot plant at the El Baix Llobregat wastewater treatment plant has completed installation and commissioning preparations, with all major equipment in place and ready for start‑up.
The Case Study 2 update describes significant milestones at this site, where the pyrolysis and biomethanation units have been installed, integrated, and successfully tested ahead of full system commissioning.
Together, these posts offer a clear picture of the advances made in both demos. The final instalment of this three‑part series, coming at the end of the month, will present Case Study 3 and its ongoing CO₂ valorisation activities. |

Ferticovery online workshop on market and replication potential
|
|
FertiCovery promotes nutrient recovery and bio-based fertilisers from biowaste, manure, and wastewater to improve soil health and support policymakers in adopting sustainable alternatives. The project evaluates 25 nutrient recovery technologies, assessing feedstocks, products, value chains, technical and environmental performance, costs, regulatory frameworks, and upscaling potential.
Join the third workshop on 13 April to provide feedback on these technologies, focusing on upscaling and regulatory opportunities and barriers. The webinar is organised by the European Biogas Association, leading FertiCovery’s market uptake efforts. |

FOLOU launches its 2nd free online course: Measuring Food Loss
|
|
The partners of the FOLOU project have launched their second free online course, “Measuring Food Loss”. Developed by University of Reading and hosted on Ubiqua (UVic-UCC), this course builds on the introductory course "Understanding Food Loss".
In this course, you’ll learn why measuring food loss is essential, how to apply the FOLOU food loss definition, and how to measure food loss in agriculture, aquaculture, and fisheries. You will also discover how food loss data can be aggregated at local, regional, and national levels, and how to use the FOLOU reporting system and registry. The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in food loss, including farmers, advisors, researchers, public administrators, and policymakers.

SYMBIO showcases circular economy solutions at Expo Osaka 2025

NUTRI-CHECK NET releases 9 policy briefs to support smarter crop nutrition across Europe

The NUTRI-CHECK NET project officially concluded in December 2025, marking the end of nearly three years of collaboration to promote smarter crop nutrition across Europe. As one of its final outputs, the project released nine policy briefs, each tailored to a partner country, summarising key findings and providing evidence-based recommendations to support more efficient and sustainable nutrient management.
These policy briefs translate practical experiences from farmers, advisors, and researchers into clear guidance for policymakers and stakeholders. Together, they represent an important legacy of the project, supporting informed decision-making and contributing to the long-term transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices in Europe.

Building on the momentum of the 1st BioINSouth Forum held in Catania, the event will bring together public authorities, leading companies, research centres and strategic stakeholders from the Andalusian ecosystem, alongside prominent representatives of the circular bioeconomy at European level.
