As the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) moves towards its first application phase (12 August 2026), the European Commission has published its first Guidance Document and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), providing practical support for the consistent implementation of the new rules across Member States.
The Regulation marks a major step towards more circular, resource-efficient and sustainable packaging systems. Its objectives are closely aligned with the TERRIFIC project, which is developing eight innovative bio-based packaging solutions designed to combine industrial performance, circularity and compatibility with different end-of-life scenarios. As Europe prepares for the transition, projects like TERRIFIC demonstrate how collaborative innovation can help bridge the gap between new policy ambitions and industrial implementation.

The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) has launched its 2026 Call for Proposals, making €170.7 million available to support collaborative research and innovation projects advancing Europe's circular bioeconomy.
Open until 22 September 2026, the call covers 13 topics ranging from biotechnology and biorefineries to bio-based materials, circular packaging and Safe and Sustainable by Design solutions.
As a CBE JU Flagship project, TERRIFIC is proud to be part of this growing innovation ecosystem and encourages organisations across the bio-based value chain to explore the new funding opportunities and help shape the next generation of sustainable industrial solutions.

The TERRIFIC Consortium recently met in Valladolid, bringing together project partners, experts and stakeholders to review progress, share knowledge and define the next steps of the project.
The meeting also hosted the Multi-Actor Interest Group (MIG) on bio-based and advanced barrier packaging at the University of Valladolid, fostering dialogue on the latest innovations in sustainable packaging materials and technologies.
Through presentations and discussions, participants explored how collaboration and innovation are driving the development of high-performance, circular packaging solutions. The event reinforced the value of cross-sector cooperation in accelerating the transition towards more sustainable packaging systems.

On 24 March, TERRIFIC participated in the CBE JU Stakeholder Forum 2026 in Brussels, one of Europe's leading events for innovation in the circular bioeconomy.
At the project's exhibition stand, visitors explored TERRIFIC's latest bio-based packaging solutions, including prototype coffee capsules and packaging films, showcasing how research is driving circular and sustainable materials.
The forum provided an excellent opportunity to connect with stakeholders from across Europe, exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration within the bio-based innovation community.

TERRIFIC reached another important milestone in the development of bio-based packaging solutions: ROTTNEROS successfully produced high-quality thermolaminated trays using a film developed by PROFECTUS from Novamont biomaterial.
The trays were showcased at Packaging Innovations Birmingham (11–12 February), demonstrating the potential of advanced bio-based materials to deliver high-performance, sustainable packaging solutions for the market.
This achievement highlights the strong collaboration across the TERRIFIC value chain—from material innovation to end-use applications—and marks another step towards accelerating the transition to a circular and competitive European packaging industry.
