In this science for policy brief, the JRC estimates that the EU livestock value chain generated around EUR 256 billion in value added in 2023, around 30 % of total biomass producing and converting sectors. In particular, primary production accounted for EUR 91 billion, food‑product manufacturing for EUR 108 billion, leather for EUR 10 billion and bio‑based chemicals & pharmaceuticals for EUR 47 billion. The importance and composition of livestock sectors vary widely across Member States.
