Highlights

Organic agriculture expansion in the EU: Assessing productivity and environmental trade-offs

EUSO makes available raster datasets describing current and projected carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks and fluxes, as well as crop yields, in European agricultural soils under different organic agriculture scenarios. The datasets were generated using the calibrated DayCent ecosystem model at European scale, combined with spatially explicit soil properties, climate data, land use information, and representative management practices. Detailed methods are provided in the accompanying manuscript and supplementary material.

Part I of EUSO Stakeholders Forum: Soil Monitoring Law (SML) webinars

Webinars in support of the Soil Monitoring Law carried on through June and July, addressing target and trigger values for water retention/infiltration and soil compaction (June 23), as well as salinisation, acidification, and excess nutrients (July 1). In addition, an informative webinar was held on June 23 on the concepts behind soil districts, soil units, the number and location of sampling sites, and LUCAS 2027.Presentations for all events are now available.

Webinars on organic carbon and organic contamination are planned for 01/10/2026.

Open vacancy in EUSO: Project Officer - Science for policy researcher in the EU Soil Observatory

The successful candidate will join the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) project. S/he will conduct scientific research on developing methodologies to assess changes in soil health by advancing EU soil monitoring and indicator development:

  • Design and implementation of several EUSO components, including interactive dashboards, integrated datasets, and bulletins. 
  • Develop methodologies for assessing soil health changes at the EU scale through the integration of diverse data sources, including AI, remote sensing, LUCAS Soil, and national surveys. Provide scientific evidence for the development and validation of innovative soil health indicators, including composite indicators, to further advance European soil monitoring and assessment.
  • Organize the EUSO Stakeholder Forum and chair/moderate regular meetings of Mission Soil clusters as the Indicators & Monitoring cluster, EUSO Working Groups and Steering Committee meetings. Organise the programme of Soil Mission Week. 
  • Contribute to the development of the Mission Soil Platform on sustainable management practices, the Mission Data Catalogue and the Soil Literacy Portal.

The third part of the EUSO Stakeholders Forum 2026 will take place during the Soils for Europe Conference. Mission Soil projects will present their main findings and results, and discuss their contributions to EU soil policies. Commission adopts certification methodologies for carbon farming under the CRCF Regulation

The European Commission has adopted the first certification methodologies for carbon farming under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation, establishing clear technical rules for certifying carbon farming activities across the EU. Covering agriculture and agroforestry on mineral soils, peatland rewetting and restoration, and afforestation, the methodologies provide a consistent, transparent and credible framework that will help farmers, foresters and land managers access new financing opportunities while supporting climate resilience, biodiversity and sustainable land management.

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the European Union’s clean transition as a pathway towards competitiveness. Adopting a systems-thinking perspective, it examines how coordinated action across climate, energy, circular economy, mobility, agri-food systems, biodiversity and ecosystems protection can contribute to a more resilient and resource-secure Europe. The report identifies evidence-informed enablers to strengthen long-term competitiveness while delivering on the EU’s climate and environmental ambitions (including soils).

Investigating the reporting requirements for the indicators soil organic carbon and deadwood across multiple policies

Policies on climate, nature, agriculture, and soils that support the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 share several indicators used to monitor implementation, including soil organic carbon (SOC) and deadwood. This report identifies differences in reporting requirements for SOC and deadwood indicators, as well as potential lack of alignment on methodologies. These findings could provide a basis for cross-sectoral technical guidance or discussions among expert groups aimed at improving the harmonisation, simplification, and cost-effectiveness of monitoring across these policies.
