The BIOEAST UniNet as a main pillar of the New EU Bioeconomy Strategy
On 27 November 2025, the European Commission presented its new Strategic Framework for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy, setting a bold direction for Europe’s transition toward a fossil-free, circular and resilient economy. A key message of the Strategy is clear: success will depend on close collaboration across Member States, regions, academia, industry, investors, and civil society. This shift toward collective delivery places regional actors such as BIOEAST UniNet as key players to support Europe’s bioeconomy and bio-based transition.
With the EU bioeconomy already valued at €2.7 trillion and supporting more than 17 million jobs, the Strategy aims to accelerate industrial transformation through innovation, sustainable biomass use, and strengthened European resilience.
BIOEAST UniNet: Strengthening Skills and Capacity Across Central and Eastern Europe
The BIOEAST macro-region faces structural capacity challenges that risk slowing down the green and digital transitions. The BIOEAST Initiative fully acknowledges the importance of the coordinated approach and tackles the issue of bioeconomy education in the BIOEAST macro region. The Thematic Working Group Bioeconomy Education and Skills (TWG BE Edu) was established in 2020 to meet the specific macro-regional education needs of the BIOEAST macro-region. It is coordinated by the BIOEAST HUB CR, z.u. The BIOEAST University Network BIOEAST UniNet was established in December 2022 as a structural part of the BIOEAST Thematic Working Group on Bioeconomy Education and Skills in Prague at the international conference "Bioeconomy Education: A BIOEAST Perspective" organised under the auspices of the EU Czech Presidency,
BIOEAST UniNet is currently networking 14 members, 4 joined in November 2025 and it is a growing academic and research network connecting universities, research centres and public authorities—addresses this gap by strengthening education, innovation, and skills development.
The Strategy explicitly highlights the value of regional networks like BIOEAST UniNet, underscoring their role in supporting Member States as they develop tailored national bioeconomy profiles and integrate them into regional and climate plans.
A Timely High-Level Discussion in Warsaw
BIOEAST Thematic Working Group Bioeconomy Education (TWG BE Edu) and BIOEAST UniNet will host a High-Level Policy Expert Discussion on Bioeconomy Education on 10th December 2025 at the Life Sciences University of Warsaw. The hybrid event will examine what skills and competencies are needed to deliver the new Strategy and how universities, ministries, and stakeholders can work together to build them.
The discussion aims to translate Europe’s updated bioeconomy ambitions into concrete educational pathways—ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow is ready for advanced biomanufacturing, sustainable agriculture, circular materials, and emerging bio-based value chains.
You can register to attend and take part in our Policy Expert Discussion event in Warsaw in the following link.
The event’s agenda will be announced soon.
A Strategy Focused on Scale-Up and Delivery
The new Strategy reinforces Europe’s ambitions in several areas:
- Innovation & Investment: A new Bioeconomy Investment Deployment Group will help de-risk bio-based projects and attract private capital.
- Lead Markets: Through the planned Bio-based Europe Alliance, companies aim to collectively procure €10 billion in bio-based solutions by 2030.
- Sustainable Biomass Use: The Strategy emphasises responsible sourcing and circular use of biomass, rewarding practices that enhance soil health and carbon sequestration.
- Strategic Autonomy: By reducing dependence on fossil fuels and imported raw materials, the EU strengthens its industrial resilience and global competitiveness.
Yet one pillar stands out for its long-term impact: “joining forces for delivery.” This pillar recognises that without skilled people, strong regional ecosystems, and coordinated capacity building, even the most advanced policies cannot achieve their full potential.
The EU’s new Bioeconomy Strategy provides a powerful vision for Europe’s future. But delivering this vision requires investment not only in technology, but in people. With its regional reach and strong academic foundation, BIOEAST UniNet is uniquely positioned to help shape the skills, capacity, and collaboration needed for a just and inclusive bio-based transition.
